How do you switch between dropdown navigation and mega menu in Involv intranet?
Learn how to enable the mega menu in Involv intranet and configure its appearance settings to replace the standard dropdown navigation.
1. Overview
Involv intranet offers two navigation styles: the standard dropdown menu and the mega menu. The dropdown menu shows nested items in a vertical list that expands as users hover or click. The mega menu presents all navigation items in a wide, structured panel that gives users an immediate overview of all available pages and sections.
A common misconception is that nesting navigation items automatically creates a mega menu. This is not the case. Even with a multi-level navigation structure, Involv intranet will display items as a dropdown list by default. To switch to the mega menu view, you must explicitly enable the Mega menu toggle in the Navigation settings. The toggle is what controls which view is active — the navigation structure determines what content appears within that view.

3. Open the Navigation settings in Involv Manager
To change the navigation display mode, you first need to access the correct settings panel. Open the Involv Manager by clicking the manager icon in your intranet. In the left sidebar, expand the Admin configuration > General section and click Navigation. This opens the Navigation configuration page where all display-related settings for the site navigation are managed.
This is the central place where you control how navigation behaves across your intranet. The settings on this page affect all users and all pages that use the Involv intranet navigation.
4. Enable the Mega Menu
At the top of the Navigation settings page, you will find the Mega menu toggle. When this toggle is turned off (grey), your navigation displays as a standard dropdown menu regardless of how many levels of nesting you have configured.
To switch to the mega menu view, click the Mega menu toggle to turn it on (orange). This single action is what transforms your navigation from a dropdown list into a wide, structured mega menu panel. Your existing navigation items and their parent-child relationships will be preserved — the mega menu simply presents them in a different visual layout.
Keep in mind that the mega menu works best when you have a multi-level navigation structure. If you only have flat, single-level items, the mega menu will still render but without the grouped layout that makes it useful. Make sure your navigation items are organized with parent and child relationships so the mega menu can display them in logical groups.
5. Configure mega menu behavior
Below the main toggle, several additional settings let you fine-tune how the mega menu works.
Open mega menu on hover controls whether the mega menu panel appears when a user hovers over a navigation item or only when they click. Enabling this creates a faster, more fluid browsing experience but may be less suitable if your menu structure is very large. Disabling it means users must click to open the menu, which provides more intentional navigation.
Mega Menu Max Amount Of Links lets you set a maximum number of links that appear in a single mega menu panel. Enter the desired number in the text field and click Apply. This is useful when a particular section of your navigation has many items and you want to prevent the mega menu from becoming overwhelming.
Mega Menu Always Full Width determines whether the mega menu panel stretches across the full width of the browser window or only spans the width needed for its content. Enabling this creates a more consistent visual appearance, especially when different menu sections have varying amounts of content.
6. Additional navigation display options
The Navigation settings page includes several other toggles that affect the overall navigation experience alongside the mega menu.
Enable Navigation Breadcrumb adds a breadcrumb trail below the navigation bar, showing users their current location within the site hierarchy. This is helpful for intranets with deep navigation structures.
Enable Back To Top Button adds a floating button that appears when users scroll down a page, allowing them to quickly return to the top. This complements the mega menu well on content-heavy pages.
Use Legacy Navigation switches the navigation back to an older rendering mode. This should generally remain disabled unless you have a specific reason to use it.
Involv Navigation Apps provides an Edit Json button for advanced configuration. This allows administrators to define custom navigation app entries in JSON format. This is intended for advanced use cases only.
7. Switch back to dropdown navigation
If you want to return to the standard dropdown view, go back to Involv Manager > General > Navigation and turn the Mega menu toggle off (grey). Your navigation structure will remain intact — only the display mode changes. The items will immediately begin rendering as a vertical dropdown list instead of the wide mega menu panel.
8. Clear the cache
After enabling or disabling the mega menu (or changing any of the related settings), you must clear the Involv intranet cache so the changes become visible to all users. Go to Involv Manager > General > Caching and click Clear Cache. Without this step, users may continue to see the old navigation style until the cache expires on its own.
9. Result
After completing these steps, your Involv intranet navigation will display in the selected style — either as a mega menu with grouped, multi-level navigation panels, or as a standard dropdown list. The toggle in the Navigation settings is the single control that determines which view is active, while your navigation item structure determines what content is shown.
